Congregational Resources for Peacemaking


Disciples Peace Fellowship seeks to provide resources for individuals and congregations seeking to promote peace and justice.  DPF Executive Committee Member Carolynn Miller, a seminary student at Candler School of Theology, has compiled an extensive set of resources for personal and congregational use in several directories listed below.  We also include here links to official statements by DPF and others on issues of peace and justice, practical guides to peacemaking, and suggestions for peace- and justice-related Bible Study and liturgy.  Check back regularly for new resources that you can use for your Bible study, youth group, congregational worship service, or personal devotion.

Peace Resource Guides:
  • Peace Sunday Resources - DPF Executive Committee member Rev. David Downing has prepared resources for the Disciples for Peace Sunday, the second Sunday of Advent.
  • Call to Action - A call to action for peace by DPF Executive Committee Member Carolynn Miller.
  • Worship Resources - The resources here can be used to help develop worship services.  There are links to numerous sources of prayers, litanies, readings, sermon ideas, and music.
  • Christian Education Resources - This page contains numerous links and a bibliography for Christian education for peace and justice.
  • Family Resources - Resources for families to use for peace and justice.
  • Denominational Peace Resources - A comprehensive list of peace fellowships and websites in various Christian denominations.

  • Secular Peace and Justice Organizations - A list of secular organizations working for non-violence, human rights, children's interests, handgun control, and other causes related to peace and justice.
  • Church Conflict Resolution - The links and publications here are useful for peacemaking within the church.  These sources can help with church conflict resolution.
  • Bible Verses for Peace - A helpful collection of Bible verses relating to peacemaking, conflict resolution, nonviolence, and reconciliation?
  • Disciples Peacemaking - Carolynn Miller provides a useful essay about the history of peacemaking in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

  • Peace Devotional - This Peace Devotional was developed for use by the DPF Executive Committee.  Use it to help your own group prayerfully reflect on peacemaking.
  • What Should the Church do About War? - DPF Executive Committee member Rev. Craig Watts offers a reflection on how the church should respond to war that was published in the December 2006 Disciples World.
  • Ten Steps to Peace - These ten steps for individuals to livc as peacemakers are drawn from a speech by Rev. Michael Kinnamon.
  • Peter Ainslie on Peace - DPF Executive Committee member Rev. Craig Watts has written this essay on the ideas of Peter Ainslie, Disciples pastor and founding president of the Council on Christian Unity, which will be printed in Encounter.
  • Mothers' Day Proclamation - These words by Julia Ward Howe are as relevant today as they were when first written in 1870.
  • Prayers for Peace - A collection of Prayers for Peace from the Episcopal Peace Fellowship.
  • Peace Resources for Children - The United Methodist Camping and Retreat Ministries has put together a useful collection of resources for helping children and youth cope with issues of war and peace.
  • DPF Statement on Iraq - The time for peace is now.  The DPF Executive Board adopted a statement on the War in Iraq back before the outbreak of hostilities in 2003.
  • A Season for Nonviolence - The Denver Area Task Force for A Season for Nonviolence has developed 64 ways that you can make a daily commitment for peace over a 64 day period.
  • Nonviolence Bibliography - A bibliography of writings on non-violence from Pace e Bene.
  • Parents Children and War - A great resources from the National Center for Children Exposed to Violence on how to talk with your children about war.
  • 35 Ways to Live More Faithfully - Rev. G. Bennett of the United Church of Christ offers 35 ways to live more faithfully as a Just Peace or Peace with Justice Congregation.
  • Pillars of Peace - The National Council of Churches offers 7 principles that can serve as a basis for building peace in the 21st Century.
  • Peace Points Starters - The Lutheran Peace Fellowship offers great ideas on how to organize a peace-focused youth group event.
  • Biblical Basis for Peace - Peggy Cowan, of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program, offers a brief review of scriptural support for peacemaking.
  • Litany for Peace - The Fellowship of Reconciliation offers this litany for peace the can be used in worship services.
  • Jesus Teaches Peace - Every Church a Peace Church provides a great Bible study of Jesus' teachings on peace.
