The Executive Committee of Disciples Peace Fellowship is very concerned
about the deteriorating situation for peace in the Middle East.
The worsening security situation in Iraq, the continuing violence in
the West Bank and Gaza, and the terrible war raging in Lebanon are all
causes for deep concern - and signs that current policies are not
working. We list here a few responses to the violence and
resources for those seeking to do something to promote peace in the
region.
- Check out the special Summer 2006 NewNotes, focusing on the
conflicts in the Middle East, with a special report from Israel.
- The General Board of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) issued a message
during their July meeting regarding peace in the Middle
East. The General Board declares, "We urge people everywhere to
work for a just peace throughout the Middle East through non-violent
and diplomatic means, rather than acts of war."
- Faithful America, an interfaith peace
organization that is a program of the National Council of Churches, is
sponsoring a program Books not Bombs,
encouraging people to send school supplies to Lebanon and Israel rather
than bombs and guns.
- The DPF Executive Committee issued an appeal for peace in Iraq
back in 2003. Our concerns over the costs of the war - not just
in monetary terms, but interms of human life and sufferring - have
proven sadly prescient.
"Here is the message which God gave to
Isaiah son of Amoz
about Judah and Jerusalem:
He will settle disputes among great nations.
They will hammer their swords into
plows,
and their spears
into pruning knives;
Nation will never
again go to war,
never prepare for
battle again."
-Isaiah 2:1, 4
